Wichita wants to improve signage for downtown parking. The city council voted Tuesday to have staff develop a new signage plan. The plan would be in addition to what’s already planned for parking lots surrounding the Intrust Bank Arena.
The plan would include a sign system that provides information on downtown parking options and transit information. The city would like them to list the number of available spaces at parking lots and also the next arrival time for city buses.
Once a plan is developed, the city will apply for a Federal Transit Administration grant. The city expects the project to cost $400,000, if it receives a grant the city would have to put up $100,000.
Council member Paul Gray says the project seems expensive. However transit staff say this signage is the best way to get people around downtown in the future. They say for all the money the city is spending downtown, this is a worthwhile investment.
